FAN.TAS.MA origin story
The International Museum of Dance Co-Directors Angel Guanajuato and Gabriel Carrion-Gonzales are excited to present “FAN.TAS.MA.” at ZOZOBRA 101 on August 29, 2025 in Santa Fe, NM. FAN.TAS.MA. is a multi-artist inter-city collaboration taking on Zozobra's 2025 theme - STEAMPUNK. Angel and Gabriel used their own perspective and pulled inspiration from the origin story of the festival, calling on the communities comprising New Mexico’s melting pot, paralleling the story of the original 5 pinturas. Angel and Gabriel asked, “what if ancient wisdom met future innovation and calling in the “steam” that has propelled these communities into future ways of healing and operating. In FAN.TAS.MA artists’ collaborate to display a powerful performance that is authentic to NM.
Zozobra spectators are taken on a journey of movement-based storytelling accompanied with a 20 minute film directed by M.C. Slavich and Meghan Noce, coinciding with performances displayed on Zozobra’s jumbotrons highlighting NM arts excellence - by Lightning Boy Foundation, WiseFool, Inner City Cirkle, and “UNBOUND.” Angel and Gabriel carefully curated stories that represent the enduring spirit of these communities, revitalization of these cultural legacies and plant the seeds of a renewed New Mexico Arts landscape.
MAIN STAGE PERFORMANCE LINEUP
MainStage performances feature talented artists from various genres that connect with the four major cultural groups in New Mexico. Albuquerque breakers Inner City Circle are one of the featured performances. Queer circus arts collective, WiseFool NM, as is the Lightning Boy Foundation, which is a youth indigenous hoop dancing crew that is coming down from Northern New Mexico. UNBOUND is a performance ritual honoring the legacy of the artists enslaved indigenous ancestors captured by the Spanish throughout New Mexico.

AUXILIARY STAGE PERFORMANCE LINEUP
In an effort to expand the festival’s footprint and entertainment, Angel and Gabriel added space for Zia Queens Crew, an all female break dancing crew from New Mexico. There are multiple fashion designers including Josh Tafoya & Alfred Quiroz featured at the event, and even two low riders, serving as rolling sculptures and representing their Chicano culture. Sons of Picasso are local legendary drag queens from Albuquerque. Finally, Nu Walkers are a queer theater performance group.
